Tafraout, the most beautiful stage of our road trip

We take good note of the advice of a local: « Do not go through Igherm, go back to Agadir and take the road to Biougra. Once Ait Baha passed, after the dam, follow the small road without a sign that branches to the right and you will have the most beautiful views.
Indeed, the road rushes into a peaceful valley, dotted with tiny pink or ocher villages and some palm trees. Its flanks retain the indelible traces of ancient terraced crops.
In Taroudant, we were told that goats did not climb argan trees until summer, when there was nothing to graze on the ground. But at the turn of a bend, we come across a few biquettes in full repetition of their number balancing!
The mysterious valley ends at Tizourgane, where there is a kasbah of about fifty houses, perched on a hillock. This landscape of great serenity would leave speechless the most talkative carpet dealers in Marrakech.
As we approach Tafraut, the mountains rise. Above our heads, the rock is tinged with pink, a color that goes wonderfully well with the shy green of spring tufts of grass that line the ground.
We put our suitcases for three days in one of these villages, in Ammelne. The hotel does not fail the legendary Moroccan hospitality, with a sincere welcome and, of course, the traditional mint tea welcome. At breakfast, we feast on msemmen, a kind of puff pastry that blends with amlou, a mixture of honey, almonds, peanuts and argan oil. Just for that, we will come back to the south of Morocco!
The first afternoon, we wander at random paths, stopping every two minutes to recover the breath that landscapes cut us. The houses matched with the pink granite of the mountains scatter among the almond trees, argan trees and palms.
The view of the oasis is superb. Abdou explains that the valley was much more populated in the past. Many Jews who lived there went to Israel after it was founded in the 1950s. Severe droughts followed in the seventies and eighties, as well as rare but violent floods that amplified the exodus.
